Teachable Tuesday -How to Store Your Paper Products

When the season changes so does your home or work place temperature, this change can affect your printer paper as well. Paper can absorb or lose moisture, depending on the atmosphere it is exposed to.

Here's a few tips for storing paper....

1. Paper should be stored at a temperature of 68°F - 75°F. Also, store out of direct sunlight, this can impact the temperature and color of the paper.

2. Keep the paper in the wrapper it came in until the time to use. Why you ask... the paper wrapper has a lining on the inside to prevent moisture from coming in or out. Once paper is opened the barrier is broken. the moisture content of the paper will begin to change.

3. If you are not using the whole ream of paper, tape or reseal the wrapper.

4. If paper has been left open for a period of time, use sheets from the center of the package.

5. Paper that has lost moisture streaks, smudges, warps, gets wavy and cause paper jam when printing.

6. Before using paper that has been stored or shipped grom a different climate allow the paper acclimate for at least 24 hours before using to avoid paper shock. Paper shock will affect printing.

7. Store paper on a flat surface, only stack 3-4 reams of paper on top of each other. Do not store paper on uneven surfaces, like the top of the printer this can cause the paper to warp.

8. Keep paper away from doors, windows, and vents. Avoid storing paper near heating and air conditioning vents, or near windows and doors that are used frequently. This could cause damage to the paper.

9. Three finger rule: do not purchase more paper than you can use in three months.

10. If you don't have a place to store your paper, purchase shelving or containers to protect your investment from the environment.
